A LOOK AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE FESTIVAL HELPED INFORM A DESIGN THAT HONOURED THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

HOW WE HELPED: After 6 years of designing for the festival we took to this year with renewed vigour. The festival was born out of Workman Arts and has established itself as the preeminent film festival on mental illness. Workman Arts being an arts focused not for profit meant there was a lot of freedom to experiment. In the past concepts for the festival were layered and had a strong tie to the visual art’s roots of the organisation. For the 20th year, we chose to focus on a logo that had been designed for the inception of the festival while poorly done 20 years ago, it still held nostalgic value for those at the festival who had been there since the start. The logo featured Freud wearing a pair of two tone 3D glasses. With that, we came up with the superimposed Freuds that meld to form one forward looking face. The simple background gave it a modern flavour and the use of serifa as a font helped solidify that future past connection. We created posters, merchandise, a simplified web presence, guerilla marketing. And for the anniversary a proper wordmark for the festival that could be used on a day to day basis outside of the annual look and feel.
